Subject: Oil blow-by.
Getting a loading of pressure, which will dump periodically into the
engine, coming out the tailpipe in the form of blue smoke that will
change to black then nothing.

This happens on the freeway only. After about 10 minutes of highway
driving the plugs will load up. I would let off the gas, smoke would
pour out, dissipate, then would run fine.

No usual noises or behavior. Run's fine.

There is oil at the base of the carb's, and it appears that oil is
blowing OUT of the rear carb. Telltale streaks coming out past the
air intake seal around the carb intake and pooling on the top of the
carb. There is also blow-by that MIGHT have come past the oil fill
cap. There's splatter on top of the aircleaner and intake.

Oil line that runs from last cylinder to oil fill tube does not have
oil buildup inside. Hose is in fine shape free of kinks.

Where do I start checking?

Just did a compression test prior to this problem less that 150 miles
ago. All were around 130.
Group: pinzgauer Message: 16649 From: Chris van Wolbeck Date: 10/20/2002
Subject: Re: Oil blow-by.
Did you check the whole crankcase breather to make sure it is not
blocked? The hose from the back cylinder is only one part of the breather.
Make sure there is free passage between the valve cover and the oil fill
tube. Is there a PCV valve on a Pinz? I haven't checked to see if mine has
one. That would be another hose, connected to the intake manifold.
Also, is it possible you overfilled the crankcase with oil?

Now, how did you get one of those mounted on a Pinz? ;)

Could be a bad valve, valve guides, I would check the compression on each cylinder again and compare the figures with your last check. Providing it was not doing this at that check.

The GP medium army tent is not going to make it to the treffen, so we
will be staying at Stump Cave instead of the lake. I will be meeting Ron
    S. and Bill C. at the location labeled 'trailer drop' (or the 'X' on the
large map) at about 8ish Thursday night.
To get to where these maps show---
Take 64 East out of Lexington about 25 miles.
Just past Winchester, you will take Bert Combs Mountain Parkway to
Stanton (or Slade if you prefer).

May be we could try to seek cooperation with US-dealers for the sake

    Don -
Yes, the place marked 'trailer drop' is the best place to drop your trailer.

I should have a few signs up, but they sometimes get removed.
We should have a FRS radio on channel 1 and a 2m on 145.555 if you're a Ham.

We won't hear you until you get closer to the cave.
The map shows the T intersection (on Sand Lick) right before it crosses the
creek. It is wrong, you will hit the intersection right after you cross the
    creek.
Take a right. After the last steep section you will come to a flat area. The
trail you want is to the left, on your right is a large, fairly clear hill.
This area on the map is the curve to the left just past where 'Barker
Branch' is printed along the creek and the trail goes between the r and k in
Barker. After that it should be the first right.
This will bring you to the Stump Cave loop. I would suggest taking the lower
trail. It is longer, but you will skip the mud holes, which were pretty
    nasty the last time.
I'll post this to the List, also.
Have a safe trip, and I'll see you there.
    John

    falling in place! :)
Anyway, I am looking at all kind of military surplus stuff and some
    questions came to my mind....
    About land-mines!
    - I have seen a TLC program that showed Canadian and French army
troops making a specialty of de-mining fields in Kosovo and serbia
etc... This seems to be SO! dangerous and SO! tedious!
What are the technical reasons why a team can not use, say an
armored truck with some kind of device attached at the front and to
simply "scan" a field. exploding all mines in the process, keeping
    the operator well protected.
The "junkyard wars" show had such a theme at one point.
I know nothing about this subject, and I am sure our armies know
what they are doing, but to me it seems so simple, and yet these
guys risk their lives unarming these VERY deadly and indecent
devices by hands! one by one!
-Also, in the same vein, a protocol to completely ban such devices
was signed by almost every nations except, USA!
    Why?
No, I do not want to stir any political broth here, or I'm I making
any judgement, I am just curious to know and understand the
reasonning behind the refusal of banning such monstruous and
inhumane arms as the personnal land-mine?
It could not be an "economical reason" as I am sure so little money
is to be made in the booby trap business!

Also, I intend to turn my future truck onto the most effective tool
I can come up with for small scale forestry work.
I intend to put an air compressor for air tools, a welder generator,
    a hydraulic pump, a capstan winch, a 24 V to 120 Vac converter...
    Did I forget anything!

    Luc,

I can't answer your land-mine "blow-up" question nor the reason why
    the US didn't sign but:

    - 24V/12V converter
    - Battery maintainer (in case you don't run the truck on a daily basis)
    - why a hydraulic pump? If you run the pump with a 24V electric motor
you add the conversion losses to the sytem. Then it would be better to
run the stuff from 24V directly.
    - maybe a real winch in case you get stuck?
    - Halogen headlight conversion (in case you have to drive at night
    through the forrest)

Quite simple, no other nation in the world deploys its troops to the scope
that the United States does. Japan, Germany, Korea.....just to name a few.

Any device that helps protect Active Duty soldiers is good in my book.
37,000 US Troops are stationed in South Korea, across the border from a 1
million man army. Explain to the parents of those troops that there is no
    need for a minefield.

The following nations did not sign the treaty when it was "unveiled."

    United States
    Russia
    China
    Turkey
    Iran
    Iraq
    Libya
    India
    Pakistan
    Egypt
    Israel
    North Korea
    South Korea
    Vietnam

Within Hours of the signing, pledges came in for land mine clean up of $87
million by the United States (to increase by $20 million after a year), $70
million by the European Union, $24 million by Norway, $16 million by Japan,
$14 million by Canada and $11 million by Germany.

    Cheers,

    Scott Ingham

youwontbesari WOW AWESOME 1972 Pinzgauer ONE OF A KIND This is an absolutely beautiful, one-of-a-kind vehicle. It is the result of 6 months of intense labor by two incredibly dedicated individuals. It is a 1972 model 710M with approx. 2500 miles on it since a complete re-build. This vehicle was hand picked at a yard in Switzerland, shipped to sunny, rust-free Arizona, and totally torn apart by Pinzgauer U.S.A. of Prescott. Each and every part was re-conditioned and/or replaced if needed. I kid you not, there is not a single part or surface on the vehicle that didn't receive a great deal of attention. All body parts, seats, window frames, roll bars, doors, bed interior, brackets, and other various parts were sand blasted, epoxy primed, and re-painted with automotive acrylic enamal with integrated clear coat. No expense was spared!!! All the upholstery (top and seats, front and rear) we!
re re-done with premium padding and a color coordinated SUNBRELLA, a top of the line canvas. The top over the rear cost over $2500 to have custom made with tinted plastic windows. Our goal here was to produce the finest Pinzgauer in America and I think we have succeeded. We have an estimated $60K into this project. This Pinzgauer features (can't list all, but ask if you need to know) a river fording ability of 27 inches, 19 inch ground clearance, four wheel, 5 speed, shift on the fly, with independant suspension with coil springs. The drive shaft is not exposed. Supports 10 passengers. The rear seats fold down flat to make an aluminum truck bed for cargo. The top, roll bars, and stays remove quickly to make the vehicle into a pick-up. The front window folds down. The max cargo weight is 1.1 tons, which is amazing for a 4300 lb total weight. Three hydraulic levers on the dash enable four wheel and diff locks.Twin batteries are installed on slide out trays. Head and knee bump!
er pads were installed. Vehicle is completely undercoated and all box tubing in frame is interior coated with wax. High/low transfer case gives 2 MPH max speed in lowest and 62 MPH in highest with stock tires. Independant axles have no leading or trailing swing arms. Progressive acting coil springs single front and dual rear. Additional hollow rubber overload springs inside of coil springs. Spring elogation 200MM max. If I were to do such a restoration, I'd never sell the vehicle. I'd
ask to be buried in it.

But $60K is easy, when you consider the cost of parts. Include labor,
and you're over it pretty quickly.

Just the engine cover, new is something like $1,000. If only the
Swiss Army would start releasing their parts supplies....

    Eric,

I agree that it's easy to reach $60k. Base vehicle with shipping $8k,
several 100h x $75 of labor and some parts and you are there. I got a
feeling for how much time it takes as I started my restoration
project and even if you can't see anything yet several hours are
    already gone.

Where I don't agree is the hope that the Swiss army starts to release
their parts depot! If this happens it means that they no longer have
them in active duty and the largest customer of Steyr is gone. BAD
for parts prices and availability in the long run!

enjoy! I have others but they are too big to upload to

VERY well, the are incredibly squishy and conformed
nicely to the terrain. They wear quickly, but since
they are off road only they should be good for many

They no longer have them in active duty, or if they do, they're in the
process of getting rid of them. There are maint and parts supply
contracts with Steyr that go on for a few years, but that'll end soon
    too.

We'll never exhaust the Swiss Army supply of parts. They've got piles
and piles of them, and there just aren't that many trucks out there.
If they were to release their parts, lower prices would be available
to us. This is pretty much what happened with the Unimog 404.
They're out of manufacture, and have been for a long time. But you
can still pick up a set of 404 axles for < $1500. Try pricing out a
    Pinz portal some time...

The Swiss are holding on to their parts because they know their value
to us, and want to make some cash. At least, that's my understanding
    of the situation.

    Eric,

I know for sure that they still have 710's and 712's in the Swiss army
and that's why they keep their spares. They may have more then they
ever need but isn't that typical for all military forces? Storing that
stuff as it should costs them more then they can ever get for them and
the few trucks which are out there would never made them keep them to
get higher prices. Once the last Pinz is sold all the spare parts will
be on the market and if they are not gone in a reasonable time frame
    they will be scrapped.

My guess is that the last Swiss 710/712's Pinzes will retire somewhere
    between 2008 and 2010.

It never resembled it mechanically, but it's the same truck, more or
less. It was made a long time ago, used by the military,
decomissioned, and eventually end-of-lifed. They started out
expensive, then a few appeared on the surplus market, then a lot of
them appeared, then the supply trickled off. Same with cheap spare
parts for them. The Pinz is following in the same footsteps.

A lot of the 404 spares that are on the market now are ex-Bundeswehr
NOS or other ex-military. (I know, NOS gaskets, seals, etc are bad,
but an axle has an indefinite shelf life.) Virtually all the
Pinzgauer spares that are on the market are factory. When the Swiss
dump their parts, our prices will go down.

one across the gap between the tail gate and the seats. Well I have only

Secure them! Just folding down the seats over them is not sufficient.
I drilled on my truck, and bolted some D-rings down to the sides of
the rear well. Some ratchet straps keep my bricks in place.

Even if you never roll the truck, a sudden stop or worse, a collision,
will turn the tubes into missiles, with the back of your head as the

sorry i dont really have the hang of this posting to a message base
or i would have replied to the original but an easy way to pick up
weight and keep it low is to do what we do on farm tractors. fill the
tires with water. i have an attachment (which i will loan out to
anyone who cant find one) it screws onto the valve stem at the tire
and to a hose. the trick is to fill the tire full but also vent
while doing the process. otherwise said tire will become part of your
face for good. the little device has a push button on its side for
the venting. i think this will work maybe if the thread on the stem
are the same. thread pitch and diameter? i used the same one off the
john deere on my toyota. so maybe it will. like i said if you will
send it back ill loan it to anyone who needs to try this deal. john

      John,

filling the tires with water may not be a good idea for a vehicle
faster then a tractor. You will increase the weight the suspension has
to carry significantly (the opposite of what you usually want) and
stoping a truck with water filled tires from higher speeds will be...
      an adventure at best.

Adding weight to the "tail" of the Pinz not only increases the
pressure of the tires on the road but also levels the rear tires
better. They usually just run on the outside which naturally isn't the
      best for traction.

A few steel plates bolt to the floor or a few bags/tubes of sand
(secured) should be the better choice.

Awhile back, there was some discussion of filling the tyres with water.
Someone--can't remember who--brought up the point that the water will spin
with the tyres. When it comes time to stop, the water will continue to
spin, making braking difficult. There was mention of some other issues as
well. Bottom line: perhaps at farm-tractor speeds, water-filled tyres can
be an advantage under some circumstances. But methinks that at highway
speeds (OK--so a Pinz's highway speed isn't all that fast), I'll stick to
      air.

      Patrick,

sorry... Austria also converted to the Teuro, oops , Euro. The
      Schilling is history.....

      Juergen

(Teuro is the combination of teuer = expensive and Euro)

Ah, yes. The English also converted to the Euro. But methinks Tanzania
still uses the shilling as a monetary unit. Not to be confused with the
Schilling. Or even with Schilling Spices.

When I lived in Tanganyika, a shilling had the value of approximately 14
U.S. cents. So my 2 shillings' worth isn't worth very much. 8-)

      Just my 2/- worth.
