Hello,
Does anyone know where I can find WRITTEN documentation that proves the 712m 6x6 can carry up to 14 passengers? I ideally from pinzguaer directly. Does the manufacturer have a website i can get this off of?

I need to show this to the automobile registration bureau.

thank you.

Great job, Scott.  Looks great.  I decided before the movie not to make my regular appearance in the local Memorial Day parade.  Now because of the movie everyone's going to miss my Pinz!

Hello Dave, how r u?

If you don't mind sharing his e-mail, and if he doesn't mind that I write him, sure, I'd love to have his e-mail address. Should you check with him first?

I'm progressing with the restoration. My main focus now is to prepare the lower part of the body (sand blasting, etc), and for that I need a Car Body Rotisserie. Believe it or not, there's no one making them down here in Brazil (or at least I can't find who makes it), so I'm evaluating if I do one of if I import one (already studies a dozen of them in the US and the best candidate so far is http://www.accessiblesystems.com/).

Hope you are dong great!

The Bücher Duro is built in Switzerland, so if it's as good and long-lasting as the Saurer trucks, it should outlive its owners...
Now it's quite different from the Pinz: much bigger (in the Swiss army it replaced the Unimog S404s and it seats 20 in the rear) and more up-to-date:, it has a diesel engine and auto gearbox, the rear compartment is heated and it is reasonably fast on paved roads.

No idea about the recent batches of Pinz.

I'd not call mine a 911 turbo, but certainly runs strong and just much
more fun to drive. You don't have to shift near as much, just way more
torque.

Winter or summer, just start up and drive away.

Offroad there is no comparison. Almost stall proof due to a variety of
factors. Some of that will vary based on design, installation, etc. But
carbs at best are an approximation and even crude EFI will be an
improvement.

Erik Maybee and a couple of others drove mine down in Florida, and Erik
also has an EFI 712 (different system, but he's also having good results
if I recall)

Have fun,

Alan

BAE Systems runs Pinzgauer production/support out of their Telford UK branch, as far as I know only to order. The plan to move production to South Africa fell through as militaries moved from soft skin to armour due to the use of IEDs and RPGs and an armoured Pinz (Vector) is an unweildy beast at best.

There was some discussion about these limiting straps on the real4x4 forum and it sounded like everyone had gotten good results from the nylon straps available for the fimr in Oklahoma.  High level of customer service too as I recall.

I have had the nylon ones on the uglyduck for years with no issues. The were cheap enough that I doubled them up on all axles for less than the cost of one stock limiting strap.

Cheers,
Jim

I replaced a broken limiting strap with the nylon ones from http://www.okoffroad.com/ as well and they work well. Just call them and say you want limiting straps for a pinz they know the correct length. I doubled up the straps.

Rather than assuming the worst & starting by chasing expensive problems, start with the basics: first, undo & clean all ground contacts that are important to the charging/starting circuit:  the cable/straps that provide engine /chassis ground, ground to the battery, ground to the solenoid and starter.  Omit none, even if difficult to reach!  And of course if something is worn or broken (like a cable or clamp or whatever) fix or replace it.  Check the positive connections too, just to be sure nothing's amiss there.   Next, make sure the battery has a charge.  Then try the starter again.  If still nothing, then check out mechanical bits...solenoid, starter and so on.  However if your engine just died enroute either something's wrong with the engine or externals (carb, distributor, fuel supply and so on) or else the engine has seriously lost compression, which would be very bad.

I suspect the grounding circuit as a start, though, from what you say.  It would explain both the engine quitting (no spark power) and can't turn over fast enough (no juice getting thru to the solenoid/starter).

When you finish cleaning the grounding circuit make sure everything's on tight, and put some protective glop on the battery posts.  It's a spray can, stuff is sticky red.  Clean the posts, etc. at least once a year.  Just undo them completely & pour boiling water over the posts & connectors to disssolve the acid buildup, them rinse everything with lots of water to get rid of the acidic water.  But not in your garage, of course.

Don't worry about not being a pro mechanic.  I've forgotten how many times I've seen "good mechanics" fail to correctly diagnose such fairly simple problems by omitting some of the very basic tests, as described above.  They try lots of unnecessary stuff first, all on your dime, of course!

Lastly, AAA drivers tell me that some 70%  of their emergency calls are due to battery problems, mostly caused by bad grounds or acid-covered posts (which prevent the battery from charging).  Take heed!

Cheers, and good luck-

Hi all,

I posted this last year but times are tough. Six months without full time employment is forcing me to sell my Pinz.

Pictures in the files section under Sean's 74 710m

Truck needs some work out does run. All parts that I have for it will go with it. I have new rub rails that are not on the truck, 24v hummer air compressor and many miscellaneous parts. Truck has 8 seatbelts in back that I installed and a Hi Lift jack on the front.

Was asking $6000 last year but now I will consider any and all offers. Truck is located in Modesto California and I will deliver it to anyone within 200 miles for no charge. We can discuss delivery for farther location.

Thanks much for your time

One personal technical gripe: the 'portal efficiency' isn't that great,
because it uses DeDion ('lazy') axle tubes, that limit ground clearance
compared to a real/lean 'solid' portal axle.
(the only good part is that the brakes are mounted high, near the diff,

Subject: Information on restoration data plate
Hi All!

I'm devising a data plate with information about the restoration I'm doing on a Pinz 710K and I want to state that the engine now has 92.5mm pistons but Main Bearings and Rod Bearings are STD. How would be the ideal way to state that on a data plate?

"Cilynder Bore     92.5"
"Main Bearings    STD"
"Rod Bearings     STD"

What other information do you think would be interesting to state on a dataplate like that, so it would make the life of someone easier if he or she plans to restore this same vehicle 30 years from now?

Does anyone have any photos or examples of Restoration Data Plates?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Kind regards,

JP

Subject: Northwest MogFest 2011 update
Hello to all.

The twelfth rendition of Northwest MogFest officially starts six weeks from today. From all early indications, it should once again be a time filled with lots of socializing with interesting people driving interesting vehicles. As usual, there should be plenty of Unimogs, Pinzgauers, Haflingers, Volvos, VW Syncros and Westies, Land Rovers, Range Rovers, MB G-wagens, Ural 2WD motorcycles, VW Iltis, large expedition campers and a smattering of other European high mobility vehicles. New for 2011 is the open invitation to the Microcar/Minicar owners and enthusiasts. Several of us attended this year's Great Pacific Northwest Micro and Minicar Extravaganza and displayed four Haflingers. I think the addition of the tiny vehicles should add a whole new facet to the NWMF experience. Imagine a Crosley Farm-o-Road parked next to (or under) a U-2450 or Tatra 813.

There are no crops planted on any of the fields this year so space should not be an issue. The Ubungsfahrt competition will be back officially this year as will the Women's Backhoe/Trackhoe completion. Axe throwing may be joined by some limited archery and/or atl-atl use. There is talk again of a Slip-n-Slide as well as a costume gala that could morph into Zombie action. A couple of folks have suggested "No Crop" crop circles. We can also do the big across-the-field dash in prep for the group photo. Haflinger polo is also on the table. The Waldersee Farm cinema will also be showing a variety of interesting offering. We looked into tethered hot air balloon rides but that was going to be a lot more expensive than last year's helicopter experience. I would like to see the helicopter back as it affords phenomenal photo opportunities but we will need to know if people are interested in taking rides this year. I have also thrown down a challenge for the Sheridan and West Valley fire departments to each come up with an individual fire apparatus to be deployed at NWMF2011. The basic concept can be seen at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkakuKCFhG8 Individuals are more than welcome to bring your own unique single person conveyance in the spirit of the KMW. Then, there is the grudge bus drag race between the 1955 Grey Ghost and the 1979 Carpenter Corsair "VW" bus. Camping, swimming, eating, laughing, etc are definitely on the agenda.

Hope to see many of you here this August.

If you need more information, go to the website. Then send us a note with any additional questions you might have.

Take care.

There's a Gent over on the Volvo list selling his C304. I thought you Mog and Pinz folks might like to see it. It'd be in Arizona, and he's asking in the ballpark of $16k for it. Pics:

His description:

I have a 1975 C304 in very good condition.  Almost everything works,  there are a few things like the window washer that is not working.
All important mechanical things are in good working order and it drives and shifts very well.  It has 38.5x11x16 Super Swamper Boggers on it which put it right up there for rock crawling.

The entire cooling system has just been gone through and the radiator was rodded out.  The cooling system now works perfectly.

There is a 6K winch on the custom front bumper and a host of other things done to it to improve the performance.

It has current plates on it and I hold clean title to the truck.

I'm sure others will chime in but the short answer is that this is absolutely a 2 person job. I watched/helped Thilo Kass do this in one of my Pinzgauers in the past and for all of the grunting and groaning and cussing, you would habe thought we were in a bar fight together.

Once you have one side "latched in", getting a really good grip on the end that you still need to seat is absolutely critical.

Hope this help....a little.
