NOAA Forecasts Late Start for Solar Cycle 24
The next 11-year solar cycle will most likely start March 2008 and peak in late 2011 or mid-2012 – up to a year later than
expected – according to a forecast issued today by NOAA’s Space
Environment Center in coordination with an international panel of solar
experts. |
|
Originally expected to start between late 2006 and early 2007, the delayed onset of Solar
Cycle 24 stymied the solar expert panel and left them evenly split on whether a weak or
strong Cycle 24 lies ahead, but it seems at this point as though none of them are predicting a
record-breaker. In the cycle forecast issued today, half of the
panel predicts a moderately strong cycle of 140 sunspots, plus or minus 20, expected
to peak in October of 2011. The other half predicts a moderately weak cycle
of 90 sunspots, plus or minus 10, peaking in August of 2012. An average solar
cycle ranges from 75 to 155 sunspots. The late decline of Cycle 23 has helped
shift the panel away from its earlier leaning toward a strong Cycle 24. Now
the group is evenly split between strong and weak. ...more info

Direct Radio-to-Radio Calling for Voice, Text, Image, CW, and Data modes
What
is ALE?
ALE is Automatic Link
Establishment.
With the capability to call up a specific station, a group of stations,
a net... or just CQ, ALE is a versatile system for connecting operators
for voice, data, text, instant messaging, CW, or image QSOs. A radio
operator
initiating an ALE call on HF or VHF, can... (read

How
ALE Works
ALE Automatic Link Establishment is a direct radio-to-radio calling system,
that requires no infrastructure, no internet, no schedules. It uses a digital signal on HF or VHF to
connect. Each ham radio ALE station uses
the operator's callsign as the calling signal. When
not actively in a QSO with another station, each HF SSB transceiver
constantly
scans through a list of frequencies, listening for its callsign. To
reach
a specific station, the caller simply enters the other station's callsign just like...

Note 1
|
All Amateur Radio ALE
channels use
"USB" Upper
SideBand (including frequencies below 10MHz). USB conforms to international
standards for ALE / Selcall, and
enables compatibility with commercial
transceivers. |
Note 2
|
The ALE-Selcall list is
designed for international, regional, and local use in the Amateur Radio Service. All channels
are subject to the different rules,
regulations, and bandplans of
the region and local country of operation. It is the responsibility
of every operator to maintain the highest technical and ethical standards
for all transmissions. Some channels
or modes in the list may not
be available in every country. The HF spectrum is a shared resource,
so there is no guarantee that a channel is clear in a local area or
region. |
Note 3
|
Amateur ALE standards:
1. ALE System= MIL-STD 188-141 ; FED-1045
(8FSK,
2.2kHzBW)
2. Call or sounding transmission duration: 30
seconds or less.
3.
Scan
rate: 1 or 2
channels
per second.
4.
Sounding
Interval= 60 Minutes (or more) (for same channel)
5. CQ Call= Netcall to "HFL" net
6. Digi Texting Audio Centre Frequency= 1500HZ (to 1800HZ)
7. Short text messaging standard = AMD
8. TWS SOUNDING (Recommended)
9. Always transmit "CLEAR LINK" after ALL CALLS and LINKING!
|
| Note 4 |
Amateur ALE Net calls
1. HFL = CQ, ALL AMATEUR RADIO ALE STATIONS
2.
HAM = EMERGENCY/RELIEF NET ONLY, AMATEUR:NGO/GOV
3.
GPR = GEO POSITION REPORTS
4.
RPT = STATION STATUS REPORTS
5.
QRZ = REPLY CALL PROMPT
6.
CQA = RESERVED FOR FUTURE USE
|
Note 5*
|
The
5MHz channels' use and frequencies may vary in each country. Although
5MHz ALE and SELCALL transmissions are authorised in some countries,
USA does not yet allow it on 5MHz. Therefore, operators in USA may
receive
monitor the 5MHz channels, but care should be taken to lock out the transmitter from
making ALE or Selcall transmissions (except in case of an Emergency). See your country's rules.
|
Note 6
|
HFLINK is an international
resource:
for radio operators using ALE Automatic Link Establishment and Selcall
Selective Calling; for the
development of
communications for
organisations, Emergency /
Relief networks; and for the
development of ALE operating methods
applicable to Amateur Radio
Service. HFLINK is the Frequency and Address Coordination group for Amateur
Radio ALE and Selective Calling.
All coordination is on a voluntary basis.
